Mortgage Insurance (PMI)

An additional upfront or recurring payment required by some lenders.

Written by Cindy Bellford

What Is It?

Some lenders and loan programs require you to pay private mortgage insurance (PMI), which is typically calculated as a percentage of the starting loan amount.

In some cases, it is a one-time upfront payment or fee that is added to the starting loan amount.

Other times it is a recurring payment or fee that is added to the monthly loan payment.
